Heavy Seas

My first Atlantic crossing was lots of fun. In the spring of 1993 Arleigh Burke was transiting to the Mediterranean Sea for it's first deployment. From our second day out until over a week later we were constantly cursed with heavy storms. This picture was taken on a very light day from the Aircraft Carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt. At times we were literally walking on the bulkheads, with 50 foot swells and green water breaking over the bridge-wings. After living in these conditions for nearly 10 days I learned a new appreciation for nature. Arleigh Burke is a 505ft long all steel vessel and we were tossed around like a rag doll in the teeth of a pit bull.
