I’ve been screwing around with my desktop a lot lately and since my brother posted some new screenies on his blog, I though I’d out-do him. Here’s some screenies. Enjoy!
Of course, all this is done on a Gnome desktop with Beryl. The dock along the bottom is Kiba-Dock and I am using the MacOSX icon theme (because I like it, that’s why). By the way, for those of you who think you need to spend hundreds of dollars on a new machine and/or video card to get cool desktop effects like you do in Vista (which is just about all you get), you’re wrong… I am running this on a 4 year-old Dell Inspiron with an nVidia 32MB graphics card (a GoFX-5200) and it runs perfectly.
I love HH… it’s my all-time favorite TV show, and it should be yours too!
Look, I don’t want any grief over the fact that I use Gnome but that I prefer Amarok. Banshee just isn’t there yet and I’ve been using Amarok for a long time. I also sometimes use XMMS, but I don’t have a rational reason for doing so.
Some basic functions like file management and .pdf viewing are easily accomplished using Gnome.
If you have a Flickr account, you need to be using F-Spot, that’s it. This is the most usable photo organization and editing tool I have ever run across… plus it links right into the Gimp and allows you to save, edit, and revert between versions that you’ve manipulated using Gimp.
I am running my desktop on Suse 10.2. I love the “Start” menu.
Streaming Flash works great on Linux.
So, if you’re thinking about putting Vista on that old PC, why bother… you’re going to get better effects, cooler graphics, more choices, and more fun (DRM-free fun at that) from using Linux than you’d ever get using MS-Vista.
Then again, if you want, send me your old PC and go buy yourself a Mac.
